What is the foundation for  a successful Search Engine Optimization (SEO) campaign? Is there a technique that effectively attracts a targeted visitor? What about the proper use of keywords on a content? It has always been said that “content is king”, and the essence of this adage is attached to websites that have enjoyed high page rankings with search engines.

Webmasters and SEO specialists have always specified the importance of creating well-written and keyword-targeted online content in driving engagement, repeat visits and contribute to tangible conversions. Quality content with keywords that have been seamlessly crafted within the content always account for the site’s enjoyment of loyal readers.

For a creative content writer, apart from the creative process involved in writing content for a website, you need to know some important techniques and factors in order to achieve the SEO objective of reaching your target market.

The different places within your content where you can insert your keywords include:

The Blog, Page or Article Title and the URL

Writing for SEO is not the same as writing for a newspaper. For SEO, your title which will become your URL has to have one or two keywords that can rank at the top of Google’s SERPs. The title should be limited to 70 characters, relevant and on-topic. Try as much as you can to make your title as catchy as possible, using as many keywords as possible.

Make sure that your URL is very similar if not exactly the same as your title. It’s important to keep the keyword or keyword phrases in both the title and the URL in order to achieve effective targeting.

Headline

Most writers will think of a news headline that will surely get the attention of the readers. In some cases, such headlines were not really on-point with what the article is all about. But because the headlines stir the interest of the readers, chances are, they will proceed to read the article to find out more details about the headlines.

When shared on Twitter or Facebook, or other social networks, the headline and a link to the blog post are the only things readers see. A witty and attention-grabbing question could be a great way to create a headline and if done correctly could get the readers to want to dig deeper to find out what the post is all about.

Body or Content

This is the meat of your SEO. You’re creating useful, valuable, informative and compelling content that will stir the interest of your readers. Crafting your article body or content such that the readers will appreciate the value of the information you’re sharing with them, you can insert your keywords or keyword phrases within the body, without losing the essence of the entire article or blog post. Using your keywords in writing relevant and high-quality content requires creativity and innate writing skill, which non-writers wouldn’t know how to do. Search engine crawlers will be able to pick up the keywords within the body of the article or post and relate it to what the post or content is about. This will be the basis of whether or not your site or post will appear in the search engine’s result pages.

These general guidelines in inserting keywords should be used:

  • Keyword may be used in the first or second paragraph of your content
  • Keyword may be added once in the last paragraph
  • Keyword may be inserted in a few other places in the body as long as it makes sense and is relevant to the flow of the idea or content.

While making the effort to integrate your keywords properly to your content, you are effectively trying to reach to your target market. Make sure that your content is not overstuffed with keywords as this would flag an alarm to search engine crawlers and may result to your site being penalized by the search engines.
